The Relation of Pocahontas & Captain John Smith

According to the history books, Pocahontas saved Captain John's Smith's life at the hands of her father, Chief Powhatan. She threw herself in front of the warrior's killing blow given at her father's command. According to Disney, she did this because she had fallen in love with Captain Smith and went on to have a relationship with him. How is the story in this book different? How old is Pocahontas? Is she trying to save Captain Smith's life when she falls in front of the warrior's club? What does this act represent in the relationship between the English settlers and the Powhatan tribe?

John Smith was known as a story embellisher. We all now the type. QB of the football team takes the captain of the cheerleading squad out on a date and what he claims happened are very different from her version and as time goes on he continues to add more and more detail of what did not happen. Pocahontas was about 10-12 years of age and it's not entirely known what transpired between the Powhantans, Pocahontas, and John Smith. I simply tell my students that she may have had something to do with his release. After all, Chief Powhatan would send her and others to the colony to trade with the colonist and teach them some of the ways of the land. I also remind them to just erase the Disney version from their minds because that isn't what happened at all.
